A full delivery of antiques has just arrived … we found a wonderful leather couch for the library and a small carved table, a new rug and couch for the music room and a lovely Biedermeier secretaire abattant for the master bedroom, and a bit more. Things are busy here at Winthrop Estate. Check in with us again soon for more pictures.
Anchored by a “palace-size” Oushak Peshawar carpet, c. 1990, this grand room features a Georgian style sofa with loose down cushions in a pistachio green woven fabric at the foot of the bed. There is a pair of Biedermeier fruitwood open armchairs for the first quarter of the 19th Century.Early 20th C. floral watercolors in shades of pink add a feminine touch.A group of early 20th Century English prints depicting the Four Seasons hang on either side of the fireplace. We just added a handsome Biedermeier day bed from the first quarter of the 19th Century adds the perfect spot for the afternoon nap.
Tuesday, late afternoon, you might expect to find owner and director of the Winthrop Estate organizing an executive retreat or wedding reception; but instead, for the past few weeks, Jamie Berg can be found in the Kitchen cooking pasta at this particular time. 16 or so local kids wait eagerly for their food in the conservatory as they play chess. This weekly gathering known as Chess Club has become the new community building project suggested to Jamie by her own two children. What a great idea to invite the families of neighborhood kids for a friendly chess tournament every week! This new idea has taken root and it seems to be creating a tradition. Chess Club hats and T-shirts have even been ordered after only 4 weeks of play.

A gracious couple (parents of the bride) recently sent us a thank-you note sharing their warm sentiments in regard to a wedding hosted at the Winthrop Estate. A big think you goes from me to my staff for helping me make this wonderful experience for our guests!
Hi Jamie,
As I write this email, I am not sure where to start….so here goes:
You and your remarkable staff at Winthrop made this past weekend the most magical and beautiful weekend imaginable. I am not sure how you were able to transform the place so many ways without us seeing any of it being done, but somehow you managed. I never saw anyone upstairs, yet the rooms were cleaned and freshened each day, the event rooms were turned over without me ever seeing them empty. Every single one of the people with whom we had contact this past weekend was absolutely super kind and helpful and always had a smile. At times of high stress that makes a huge difference. The estate was absolutely magnificent in all its incarnations and all who stayed with us had a super fantastic time. You were wonderful with everyone and somehow (I wish I could do this) always had a smile on your face! We loved that! It was really nice for your husband to stop in at the end of each evening. My son, husband and Carl enjoyed speaking with him. We are indebted to you guys for loaning us the most spectacular place in Berkshire county!
Thanks for an absolutely MAGNIFICENT weekend!
Fondly,
Sally and Michael
PS The ‘kids’ are on a plane on the way to Australia but I know they would send their great thanks as well!
Today a guest asked me what her kids could do in the way of entertainment while the adults enjoyed an executive retreat. Now as an employee who grew up in Lenox, I can tell you that there are tons of fun things for kids to do in Berkshire County. Apart from the pingpong, foosball, Wii, frisbee and other fun games available at the mansion, there are also several youth oriented venues nearby. Check out the following links for some ideas:
From great downhill skiing and tubing in the winter to devil carts and water slides in the summer, Bousquet offers a wide range of fun for kids of many ages.
This museum offers many youth friendly exhibits throughout the year including displays on dinosaurs, mammals, and ancient civilizations. The gift store also has loads of fun gifts for kids like rock candy kits and stuffed animals.
And for a bit of small town local flavor, check out the Lenox Community center for a playground, tennis courts, a basketball court, and even ice skating in the winter! Don’t miss out on the fun, kids, there’s enough to go around and more.
The Winthrop Estate just held its second successful TEDx conference called TEDxWomen. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the TED brand, you can visit their website and enjoy their videos of material presented at their internationally acclaimed conferences (click here). TED is a company who’s primary objective is the spread of good ideas. By assembling some of the world’s best and brightest thinkers and doers, TED has functioned as a mechanism for people and companies to connect. Speakers such as Bill Gates, Hilary Clinton and Chris Anderson have all given presentations to the attendees of TED conferences. TEDx is a subdivision of this organization that allows local communities to design their own TED-like conferences. It seems appropriate that the word “idea” adorns the license plate of Jamie Berg (the owner of the Winthrop Estate).
As much as it may seem like the Winthrop Estate is a world apart from a reality of the Lenox community, the owners and staff members work hard to plan community family events to encourage cohesion and friendship within our neighborhood. For example, a couple weeks ago the Winthrop Estate hosted a neighborhood barbecue for the families of Yokun Avenue and Cliffwood Street. The potluck event was a wonderful success with over 200 guests, yard games and plenty of food. A friendly volleyball tournament even took place and lasted until a lack of sunlight forced the kids to switch to a game of flashlight tag. Happy with the community building experience, I have started to think of new neighborhood events. Any good ideas?
The Winthrop Estate was originally created as a summer home in 1875 for Henri Braem, U.S. Ambassador to Denmark.
In 2003, the property was bought by Ethan and Jamie Berg who embarked on a five-year restoration of the buildings and grounds in order to return the estate to its original purpose- a beautiful retreat in the country.
The Winthrop Estate is open year-round and hosts elegant weddings, private parties, corporate retreats, celebrations, distinctive getaways, reunions and extraordinary family vacations.
